How long does Corten steel last?
Corten steel will patina or rust within six months of exposure to the atmosphere. Most weathering steels require dry/wet weather cycling to form and oxidize. The protective layer of the patina is corrosion-resistant. The service life of Corten steel ranges from a few decades to more than 100 years.

Is weathering steel just mild steel?
Corten steel and mild steel are both carbon steels. The chemical composition of the two is slightly different. Corten steel forms a protective layer that slows down the corrosion process. Mild steel does not form a protective coating, but aesthetically, mild steel is very similar to Corten steel.

Principles of Corten steel weathering action:
Please note: Corten products may arrive at any stage of weathering. The unweathered areas of the staircase will take on the color of newly manufactured steel with a dark oil coating.
As Cotton steel stairs begin to weather, the oil residue will gradually break down.
Your stairs will gradually turn a uniform orange-brown color. Please note that the decomposing residue may stain stone or concrete surfaces, so keep this in mind when deciding where to place your staircase.
After 9 months, the staircase should be almost completely rust-colored.
